Be informed that in Joomla! 3.x, you could create the override files in the Template Manager. When in the Template Manager, click on the link Templates on the left panel. In the screen "Template Manager: Templates", click on the link TemplateName Details and (e.g., Protostar Details and Files) and in the resultant screen click on the tab "Create Overrides" and choose the Component (in this case it would be com_users -> Registration and com_users -> Profile).
For the Edit profile screen, you have to edit the file edit.php in the override directories created. For the Registration, you have to edit the file default.php.
