Thanks very much for replying. A colleague actually fixed the problem with some Javascript. A Menu wouldn't have worked due to the nature of what we were doing - using Articles Category to list the 200-or-so pages, separated by the initial letter (i.e. "A", followed by Alan, Alice, etc, which were all in the category "A"). It was the best way to do this index page, so that it would automatically add new articles (pages) when created and automatically remove articles when unpublished or deleted (no need to edit menus). But on its own it created annoying breadcrumbs. We got this fixed by using some Javascript to assign the parent category (e.g. "People").
