I found it easier to view them as boxes on a page that hold "stuff" - text/photos/lists of articles/links etc. These all get placed on the various pages according to the positions - left / right mapped out in the joomla layout (template).
The template map was essential to figuring out how joomla hangs together. As an artist by trade, I have a sketchbook of drawings & notes done trying to visualize a CMS. lol Here's a sample to illustrate.
