Performance - Joomla! 2.5 • Enabling Caching Crashes certain Extensions.

I recently updated to Joomla 2.5.16 and then Joomla 2.5.17 .

While I was using Joomla 2.5.15 I was not encountering the following issue.

I use a plugin called jdownloads for a download library section of our site which can be seen here.

http://www.suntechmed.com/support/custo ... ad-library

After the Joomla 2.5.16 update I started encountering issues with the download library. I could sometimes navigate for 4 or 5 pages (or sometimes immediately) within the download library but eventually I would get the following error:

Fatal error: Call to a member function get() on a non-object in /home/suntech/public_html/suntechmed/releases/20130316043952/components/com_jdownloads/jdownloads.php on line 42

I searched for a while to find a solution and what made it more frustrating was that the problem was intermittent.

Finally, I discovered that if I turned off caching using the global configuration that the problem no longer persisted. (and if I turn on caching it immediately crashes that section of the site)

We also recently moved to a VPS from a shared hosting plan and we have had issues with reaching our memory limitations. Could this be related?

I am looking for some suggestions as I have been trying to find a solution for some time now.

Oh and.. when I go to my extensions manager and select the warnings tab I see this:

"The PHP temporary directory is the directory that PHP uses to store an uploaded file before Joomla! can access this file. Whilst the directory not being set isn't always a problem, if you are having issues with manifest files not being detected or uploaded files not being detected, setting this in your php.ini file might fix the issue."

This sounds like it may be related to the download library as it consists of files that have been uploaded. I'm not sure what I would need to change in my php.ini file to correct the issue.

Thank you for your help!
