Installation Joomla! 2.5 • update 2.5.14 to 2.5.17 can't write to joomla.xml error

I'm trying to update Joomla through the automatic updates. It says it can't write to joomla.xml. The permissions are correct. I even tried to change them but they revert back. How can I update Joomla?
