General Questions/New to Joomla! 3.x • Re: I don't understand Category vs. Article

You use Categories to set up a Menu Item to display all of the articles in a specific category - either in a list format or a blog format. The blog format will display the content in a specified number of articles, the list just displays the titles.

Say you had a website about Gardening. You had several articles on specific plant types and a number of articles on lawn care. You would have a Category on plants and a Category on Lawn Care. You could set up a Category List or a Category Blog so the visitor could easily see all of the articles on that topic.

If you use Categories, you only need to set up the two Menu Items, Lawn Care and Plants. Any new articles are automatically added to the list or blog articles. The user then clicks on the title of the article (or the Read More link) and will see just that article.

If you chose to just use Single Article Menu Types and not Categories, then you need to create a new Menu Item for every article you write, or it won't be associated with a webpage on your site.
