In all the sites I have worked on and trained people to use I have never come across some of your suggestions eg the import images that are copy/pasted
Exactly my point of the thread's title. No one has the need for the function until it exists and they realize the benefit. When people drove around in cars with loud exhausts, no one had the need for a muffler until one smart guy added it and then it became the norm.

Totally different client types served. Every website client I have served with a Joomla system, whether corporate or blogger, has asked for an auto truncate function for category blog view text, a comment system and a simple method to add menu item. Sometimes I end up using WordPress or Drupal rather than modify Joomla with coding or an extension.

The aim of the core of joomla is that it will provide the things that everyone needs and that the requirements for specific types of sites are best handled by extensions.
This must be the reason the poll component was removed from the core. Someone decided it was not 'the thing that everyone needs'.
For this reason, why include the 'Messaging' component? I have never used it, and while there may be inquiries about its use on the web, I have never seen any at this forum. Since you posted your response, I have asked some Joomla users about the Messaging tool and their response has unanimously been "What is it? I didn't even know it existed!" Maybe it is required as part of the global system emailing functionality, it which case, it has to exist.
The fact is, all these commonly used third party extensions have gained almost equal download popularity as Joomla, because their functions are desired and demanded by millions of Joomla users!
