Beez3 is a default Joomla template, it should display com_content correctly, at least I haven't had such problem, but to tell the truth, I do not use default templates at all.
But did you try tutorials I've recommended above? It should help with customization the pagination elements.
Otherwise you may look for alternative templates. Here is a brief article:
