When you add an image to an article, it has to reside somewhere and before you can find it from the web server for the link, you need to upload it to the server, for example to the images folder. You may have uploaded a selection of images to a folder beforehand and therefore you can add an image to the article straight away, without having good to upload it while using the editor.
