General Questions/New to Joomla! 3.x • auto-gen alias

new articles, menus, etc i write in a fresh joomla install all seem to have a problem that the auto-generated alias is already in use, or something to that effect. i forget the exact message. it is a brand new install, so i'm pretty sure the alias isn't already there. since i don't really know what the alias is for, i just throw in three random characters for the alias, and so far everything seems ok. should i be concerned?
