Ya it's all about customer support and that's hard to come by sometimes. The http/https issue though is common, programmers don't cover all cases and that's what software updates are for but if they haven't resolved it than I'd stop using them as well because features and improvements are what extensions are all about, can't stay at v 1.0 forever.
The one downfall of joomla is one of it's greatest strengths suprisingly which is the pluggability/extensions. Not all developers are created equal and same with the support they provide, since it's not wrangled in by Joomla it tends to be all over the place. But there are a lot of good developers and extensions out there, too bad you came across a cruddy one.
