Administration Joomla! 3.x • Smart Search Indexing Question

I'm trying to have certain articles not show up in the search results and I can unpublish them from the smart search component but the issue I am having is the part where when that article is updated, it publishes the article in smart search thus making it searchable again. Is there any way to stop smart search from republishing these unpublished items?
