If the email created at alfahosting is new, make sure you are able to use it. Make sure it sends and receive emails.
Once you know the email account is functional. Delete all cookies from your browser and try your Joomla settings again.
Check if your web hosting is blocking its own ip for outgoing connections.
In my case I was having issues retrieving updates for two of my third party plugins. I added the remote IPs and then the outgoing scripts executed properly. That could be your case too.
