Templates for Joomla! 3.x • How can I call article specific items from template index?

Code:

<?php echo htmlspecialchars($images->image_fulltext); ?>

this is used in my overrides for displaying the full article image.



I want to try and do something different, and use the featured image space (that's in my template index file as a module), to display the full article image when one is set.



Obviously this code doesn't work in the template index file, as it's not in the correct scope. Can someone give me some pointers as to try and call article specific items from the template index file?
