General Questions/New to Joomla! 2.5 • SSL causes wrong page to come up

I have a SSL certificate and some pages that require SSL (order forms written in php) that work fine. My problem is if a user goes to say the home page in my joomla! site using https:// they get redirected to my site map with screwed up style. I would expect someone using https be treated like anyone else, except slower performance and encrypted packets. Is there some setting somewhere that disallows secure https for joomla! pages?
