General Questions/New to Joomla! 3.x • Show all categories in blog like front page?

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum I wasn't sure if it should be here or under migrate, but I think this is just a joomla 3 thing.

Before in joomla 1.5 (I migrated to 3.3) you had a front page that showed all the articles if you wanted regardless of categories as long as they were set to front page (now I know it's called featured).

To recreate this in another menu item you could do a section blog layout, but joomla 3 does not have sections anymore.

So I've gathered that you can't use a category blog layout or featured with more than one category. The thing is featured actually is giving me an option of "all categories" but it just ends up showing the one that for whatever reason joomla 3 made my default category when I upgraded.

I'm not sure why the home menu item has allowed it to show all categories, perhaps it is because it is the front page or because it was set up in joomla 1.5 originally that way.

Is there a way to do this? I wanted to try to copy the menu item (well save as copy) but i'm afraid it will make the original one that's working now change so I don't want to mess with it.
