I'm trying to figure out how to create my own menu at the "type" nomenclature is totally confusing. I'm glad I found this thread.
Joomla devs, a lesson on the English language: the word "TYPE" is used in to refer to a collection of similar items (apples and oranges are TYPES of fruit). To uniquely identify an item within that collection (which is what I'm assuming TYPE is supposed to mean in the Menu Type), such as an apple or orange in the collection called "fruit", you would want to use "ID" or "UNIQUE NAME".
I didn't realize that was such a difficult concept...
