What you could do before attempting anything is to take a copy of the template and do the experiment in the copied version of the template (i.e., newly copied template).
In the Template Manager, when you open a template for edit, in the resultant screen there is a feature to copy the template in a new name.
As for as looking for the excess css entry, you have to check various file such as the file index.php and other css files. In the index.php file, you can find reference to the module positions used and the divs (or classes) used in the around the modules.
