Hmnn, that doesn't seem to work. I've targeted .column-1 img with those styles and there is still the space to the right of the image. I've attached the screenshot. The left article in the second row has the styles applied as you indicated, the right article just has max-width:50% assigned and the result is the same. The containing div is remaining the width of the unscaled original image. So the first article's containing div is taking up 300 pixels in width which is the width of the original image which itself is displayed at 50% (150px)



Also, I don't see a way to do a layout override of the featured articles. The only thing that I see that is possible is to do a regular template override of /components/com_content/views/featured/tmpl/default_item.php.
