SSL really doesn't incur much over head, I think like it would be 1-200 milliseconds maybe or 'slow down'...you have to make sure when accessing over https resources aren't being served insecurely over http which can get blocked. Developers hard code sometimes so look for "http://" in your css/js/image resources being loaded when accessing the site, if something is blocked it won't download and thus won't load. Just a guess and would be more related to your third party stuff.
You can use the developer panel in chrome,firefox,ie to see if all your resaources are https or if there's errors and warnings.
As for the wrong page, check joomla settings and make sure nothing is set there telling it to use another link or there's no redirects setup.
Not sure if this is your issue though. Would need a link to inspect.
