i use SP Upgrade to migrate sites and find it very effective for Joomla core items. each third-party extension you will want to look at individually as to it's migration path/instructions.
note that assets get a bit messed up in the migration process and you can use ACL Manager to fix them in a flash. http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... trol/17951
planning is going to be your #1 step. take the time to read and plan. while it is old, we did a doc for our JUG on planning for migration. the concepts are the same now, just the version numbers have changed. http://joomlabayarea.com/notes/16-plann ... -joomla-16
